Doula Support in West & North Yorkshire
Antenatal, Birth and Postnatal Doula Support in the Yorkshire area
Are you pregnant or recently had a baby in Yorkshire or surrounding area?
Did you know that as a Doula, I can support you through fertility, pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum? According to Doula UK, "women who receive continuous support may be less likely to use pain medications, may have shorter labours, and may be more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience." Hiring a Doula through pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum, has so many positive benefits.
My Doula services are available to families living within the Yorkshire area. I live in West Yorkshire, but I can travel as far as certain parts of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and East Yorkshire. Due to my great location in Leeds, near Wakefield, I regularly travel around the Yorkshire area with my family. We are regular visitors of Harewood House in Leeds, Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough and Sheffield Arena, where we like to watch Sheffield Steelers play Ice Hockey.
I can support you at whatever stage you are at in your parenting journey. As an experienced local doula in West Yorkshire, I am very familiar with the local maternity systems. I had both of my 2 children at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust and I am also the Co-Chair for Leeds Maternity Voices Partnership. I work closely with the maternity team at LGI and SJUH and I have supported many clients who are using Yorkshire maternity services.
What does a Doula do?
Whether you are looking for antenatal support, birth doula support or postnatal doula support in North or West Yorkshire, I can assist you. I can make you and your partner feel excited about your birth, prepared and informed. I will show you that you do have choices in your birth plan and you can be confident and in control. This will enable you to have a positive birth experience, however that might look. As a doula, I can help you to plan and prepare for birth, help you to be able to make informed decisions and understand different coping techniques, when you are in labour. I can explain the benefits and risks of each pain relief option and teach you hypnobirthing techniques, to make you feel calm, confident and in control during labour. I can make you aware of the various places where you can give birth in Yorkshire, such as in a hospital, in a birthing centre or at home. There are a number of birth centres across Yorkshire and these can be a great choice for people wanting a home from home environment, but with the comfort of knowing that medical support is close by. A birth centre can provide spacious rooms, to allow for lots of space for an active birth. They have birth pools, to accommodate a water birth. They have adjustable lighting, bean bags, en-suite bathrooms, a reclining chair for birth partners, Bluetooth speakers, resuscitation equipment, entenox (gas and air), diamorphine and pethidine, if required. They are managed solely by midwives and maternity support workers. In Leeds there is the Lotus Suite birth centre, at the LGI Hospital. In Wakefield, there is the birth centre at Pinderfields hospital and in Dewsbury, there is the newly reopened Bronte birth centre. In Yorkshire, there are various birth place options to choose from and I can help you to make the decision that feels right for you.

As a Doula, I can also help you to understand the labour and birth process, be by your side when you are in labour and giving birth and help to keep you and your partner feeling calm and supported. I can advocate for you if you want me to, support you emotionally and physically during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I can visit you at your home during the postnatal period and offer you any feeding support that you might want, whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding. I can listen to your birth story and have a birth debrief with you. I can listen to any concerns or worries that you might have about yourself, your partner or your baby. I can help you to keep on top of the everyday chores, from doing the laundry, cooking, light housework etc. I can hold your baby whilst you take a nap, have a rest or a relaxing bath.

I live between South Leeds and Wakefield, so I am within a very short distance from lots of Yorkshire towns, that I can access easily. My local maternity unit is Pinderfields hospital and I can be there in around 15 minutes, (depending on traffic). I am also very near to Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James's University Hospital (SJUH). I am about 15 minutes drive away from Dewsbury Bronte Birth Centre, around 30 minutes drive away from Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), around 25 minutes away from Calderdale Royal Hospital and Barnsley Hospital and around 45 minutes away from Harrogate District Hospital and York Maternity Unit. Depending on traffic, I can be at many different Yorkshire maternity hospitals, in under 1 hour.

As a doula, I have supported lots of new and expectant parents in Yorkshire. Here is what some of them have to say....

"I was completely thrown by the whirlwind of having a newborn. I was in need of practical support simply so I could nap. I felt lots of emotions that I had never experienced before, difficulties with family, adjusting to this new role, and I wanted to chat to someone who wouldn’t have a vested interest themselves." - A.H

"Julia made me feel less invisible and had a wonderful capacity to listen without judgment. I felt I could be myself with her and she made a huge difference to my first month as a mother." - A.H

"Julia very subtly empowered us through the whole process and this led to a great birth experience, that I will always look back on with positivity." - Emily

"If you are at all worried or nervous about anything to come, during your pregnancy, birth or postpartum period, a Doula is worth their weight in gold!" - Victoria
